About the Podcast
Two dads, a VHS collection's worth of nostalgia, and strong opinions about whether Road House deserved a Best Picture nom.
What We're All About
2 Dads 1 Movie is all about nostalgia. The 1980s and 1990s were the last great decades, and hey, we were lucky enough to be there. If you were too... welcome! We hope you enjoy our weekly trips down memory lane.
We're not film critics. We're just two guys who grew up on Fruity Pebbles and Arnold one-liners, rewatching the movies we loved as kids with the wisdom of... slightly older kids.
How This Whole Thing Started
Like all great duos, Steve and Nic have an origin story. But, like all busy dads, it's just not that impressive when you boil it down. And we're ok with that! Steve had been considering starting a podcast for a while, with a lot of different topics as possibilities. Then, one day, it struck him: Nic is like the funniest guy he knows, so, y'know, maybe ask him. And a simple text message later, the idea was born, and the 2 Dads were off to the races.
What Listeners Can Expect
Release Schedule
New episodes come out every Wednesday morning at 5am Pacific / 8am Eastern.
Episode Structure
Every episode breaks down in roughly the same way:
1. An intro: what movie are we talking about, which one of us picked it, and why?
2. Just The Facts: runtime, release date, cast & crew, budget, box office, and ratings. The nuts and bolts.
3. The bulk of the episode. We walk through the plot, pointing out fun facts, sharing our favorite lines, and asking "Where else do I know that guy from?"
4. Our ratings and wrapup: after the rundown, we give our personal score out of 5, and the combined rating out of 10 becomes our official take on the film. Then, the host who didn't pick the current movie announces what we're watching for next week.
Meet the Dads
Steve Paulo
Co-Host, Producer
Although once a promsing young stage actor (his mom loved all of his performances in High School), Steve's worked in software for over 20 years, despite the pull movies and Hollywood have always had on his subconcious. Somewhere deep inside there is still a screenwriter waiting for his big break... or, y'know, to actually finish a screenplay.
Like many boys who grew up in the '80s, Steve was raised on Spielberg, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Saturday morning cartoons, and never quite landing the plane in Top Gun on the NES. Steve's lucky enough to be married to his best friend, and is a father of two great kids who keep him young at heart, even though the many grays in his beard prove that he is, indeed, an old.
A semiprofessional Voice Actor for the last few years, podcasting was just the next natural step in side gigs that take a ton of time and result in neither good pay nor the slightest fame. So in November 2024, he floated the idea past his ol' pal Nic, and the rest is (hopefully) podcasting history.
Nic Briana
Co-Host, The Funnier One
Nic grew up with no movie channels and no VCR, so by the time he hit his teens he had a lot of catching up to do, but luckily he also had a Blockbuster card. The discovery of cheesy '80s-'90s action movies, '70s Blaxploitation, and then some actual classics via his film student friends gave Nic a deep appreciation for unintentional comedy, real social commentary and, of course, boobs and explosions. It can make people very mad when he mentions certain movies he has never seen.
Nic's first job ever was at a movie theater, and he quickly fell in love with show biz. After a brief 24 year pivot to public accounting he was itching to get back into the cinema game. When his friend Steve asked him to start a movie podcast, Nic jumped at the chance and the pod was born.
A happily married father, Nic's wife and daughter share his love for goofy comedy and they are both equally disgusted when they walk in and find him watching a Steven Seagal movie. Nic enjoys art, oil painting in particular, and you may find him performing stand-up comedy and competing in comedy roast battles around the SF Bay Area.
Behind the Curtain
How We Pick Movies
We take turns. We go back-and-forth. Like, fair. Like we learned in school back in the '80s. Every week either Nic picked the movie or Steve did, and next week it'll be reversed. Sometimes we fit a theme, like Shocktoberfest or Cagevember, but most of the time, it's just vibes. We have our movies planned out a long time into the future. We aren't going anywhere.
Recording Setup
We record in-person in the conference room of Nic's accounting offices. We're that baller. Sometimes loud motorcycles or fire engines drive by, but hey, that's what post-production is for!
We use Shure mics (Steve a SM7B and Nic a SM58 because that's what Steve had lying around) and record into a Zoom PodTrak P4. Steve does the editing and production in REAPER, and the sound is pretty dang good, thanks in large part to iZotope RX 11's suite of plugins. Steve could geek out about the tech all day, so if you want to have that convo, email him!
Fun Facts
- We feature an unnatural number of movies that include missing or artificial limbs. It got to be a thing when we realized we back-to-back'd The Fugitive and Army of Darkness.
- We have decided the Official Vehicle of Crime is the Dirtbike. Because it is.
- John Carpenter is our mascot, having been involved in multiple ways in three of the movies we've covered. Some day he will be dethroned. Probably by Stephen Tobolowsky or Denholm Elliott.
